Counseling for Middle Life Transitions

Change and uncertainly are the only things that are certain in life.

While we may feel like we should become better at adapting to life transitions over time, new and unfamiliar challenges often arise creating opportunities for reflection, adjustment and growth.

Some middle life transitions originate from inner processes of self-reflection and questioning one’s role in relation to social life, work situation, achievements/dreams, family connections, parenthood, the meaning of life and more. People in this stage of life may take time to examine the direction of their lives and their place in it.

In addition, these self-reflective processes may be combined with unpredictable life events such as adjusting to living with serious illness or that of a loved one, taking on the role of a caregiver, facing loss and grief, relocation/immigration, breakage of a long term relationship, loss of work and more. These are external events that are affecting one’s life and forcefully demand readjustment to the new reality.

And sometimes all the above happen at the same time…. Life gives you no breaks, and this new reality becomes the new baseline. You may not have even had a moment to stop, breath and adjust.

Imagine being like water…

Like water in a river that keeps changing shape and form while adjusting to new terrain while always finding a Middle Way of passage, showing up in its different forms depending on what is needed in any given situation.

Sometimes it is rushing, intense and stormy, while other times it is serene and calm.

Sometimes it is frozen and stagnant and other times it gains momentum and flow.

Sometimes water erodes the strongest rock and breaks through whatever blocks its movement, while other times it is easier to find an alternative path to overcome the presented obstacle.

In Middle Way Counseling we too can explore and adapt to the ever changing landscape of life through cultivating the resilient qualities of water.
